Using
the Gibb’s Reflective Model I will reflect on the seventh Lab session we had for this
semester. It took place on the 21st of September.
Description: This week we had our mid semester exam.
Therefore, I only completed the IV therapy workbook during this week’s session.
I did the reading prescribed in the workbook and worked through the questions.
Feelings: I felt a little confused at first because this
information was all new to me. However, as I read the readings and solved the
questions I felt interested and more informed.
Evaluation: It felt bad not knowing anything at first , but
this only motivated me to want to read and learn more. It was really good
having readings prescribed, this gave me a sense of direction as to what I
should know. This made the process easier and to the point.
Analysis: It was very important to do this workbook, in
order to get informed about the skill of IV insertion, before performing the
actual skill. Specifically for this skill, the workbook was crucial because of
how difficult and detailed this skill is.
Conclusion: I finished the workbook, and, therefore, there
was nothing else to do.
Action Plan: I plan to read more about IV insertion, the
equipment used and the various veins used for IV insertion, in order to be well
prepared to perform this skill efficiently.
The guide for catheter selection:
22-24 G: for extremely small and fragile veins
18-20 G: medical and surgical patients
16-20 G: trauma
14-16 G: life threatening situations such as PPH in pregnant women.
(Curtis & Ramsden, 2011).
